Dr. V. Franklin :: Dr. Franklin was born on 18th December 1938 in the little hamlet of Cheppanam in East Marad village of the princely state of Cochin. He grew under the tutelage of his grandfather Paili Vaidyan and his father Varghese Vaidyan who were well known Ayurvedic physicians. He joined the Ayurvedic College, Trivandrum in 1962. Family Traditions :: The family practice had influenced Franklin's thoughts right from his young age and this naturally led him to opting for formal education in this branch of medicine. This would strengthen the knowledge base acquired through a family tradition spread over four centuries with documentary evidence from the 18th century onwards. Formal Education :: Trained under the leading lights in Aurvedic practice of 1960's Thiruvillvamala EBC Warrier, Devasia and BC Chakrapani, Dr. Franklin gained immense knowledge during his formal education days at the Ayurveda College, Trivandrum. His unquenched thirst for further knowledge in this exclusive branch of science led him to search for practitioners of the time who had traditional knowledge in this branch of medicine. The Undocumented Horizon :: Nedumangadu Laxman Vaidyar, a product of the original gurukul system of training was one of the most renowned Ayurvedic practitioners of the time. Dr. Franklin was selected out of sheer competence that was demonstrated in the trial by fire of those days. After the initiation, Laxmanan Vaidyar brought up this disciple with near paternal affection for over fifteen years in the science of Alchemistry (Neetu Marunnu) which is being practised even now. This knowledge has now been translated into the medical practice though its applications in 'ojaskshaya' immune deficiency. This is widely practiced in the treatment of HIV infection and very commonly in people suffering from frequent diseases. Elderly people in west Europe have been established beneficiaries of this Ayurvedic practise for more than a decade. In the Nineteen sixties Raman Kani Vaidyar was the tribal physician par excellence of the Kani tribe of the Western Ghats. He was also a legendary Ayurvedic Herbalist, a walking encyclopedia on herbs and their use in treating diseases as derived from the tradition of immemorial ancestors of his tribe, the Kanis. He lived in the forests adjoining Amburi (Trivandrum district), a part of the Agastyar bio-reserve, which is a green house for a variety of very rare herbs. Dr. Franklin was closely associated with Raman Kani Vaidyar for over 30 years, and this led to the formalization of his knowledge and extended the use of this treatment which otherwise would have perished. One of the exotic documented cases relates to that of metallic poisoning due to orthopedic implant that was successfully treated. Malik Mohammad was a renowned alchemist of the time who accepted Dr. Franklin as his disciple. He was one of the best alchemists and a 'sathwik' of that time. Dr. Franklin's quest for understanding the ocean of knowledge on Ayurveda led him to travel wide into the interior parts of the land and to live with many renowned physicians in and around Kerala to understand the undocumented horizons of Ayurveda. The knowledge which was distributed among different families practicing Ayurveda during the ancient period would have perished with the family heads not getting the right successors. Much of that knowledge was documented and is shared with the new geneartion. Anointed by Kalladimasthan, the iconic saint of the famous Muslim Shrine of Bhima Palli in Trivandrum Dr. Franklin perused his interest. He was also blessed by Sri. Neelakanta Padha Gurukkal who was popularly known as Cheenkottu Koonam Swami and was an Ayurvedic physician of repute. Spurred by the contract with these sages, Dr. Franklin became the undisputed specialist in the areas that he pursued in this part of the county. From the time when Kovalam started expanding as a beach destination it was Dr. Franklin, who brilliantly made a judicious blend of Ayurveda and Tourism. This was a time when Ayurveda was not even heard of in the tourism industry. Dr. Franklin made the beach experience exciting, vigorous and rejuvenating by proposing and demonstrating Ayurvedic treatments to the initial travelers from Western Europe and US to the famed Kovalam beaches. This idea caught the fancy of elderly west European tourists season by season. Naturally when Kovalam beach developed new resorts Dr. Franklin's expertise came to be in great demand. There were repeat visits by tourists and consultations over the telephone after they returned home to Europe. Scores of beach resorts have utilized the services offered by Dr. Franklin, which became a catalyst for the entire tourism industry. Awards and Accolades :: Dr. Franklin was given " Tourism Man of the Year " award by the then US Consulate General Mr. Bernard J. Alter in March 2000. In 2006, he was adjudjed the best Ayurvedic Doctor and a special award was presented by Sri. A. K. Antony. Again in 2007, Dr. Franklin was awarded as " The Best Ayurvedic Doctor " by His Highness the Maharaja of Travancore.

Franklin, the Managing Director of Dr. Franklin’s Panchakarma Institute & Research Centre.
